Chickies Rock

Chickies Rock is a state park and a slope soaring site along the Susquehanna River on the southern 3 grass field at the top of a 100 M (300+ ft) hill facing into the prevailing westerly wind. Upwind of the slope the Susquehanna River stretches wide and shallow, allowing the wind to flow straight for a good distance. This gives the wind a smooth quality at this site, except where it is stirred up near the surface by the trees at the base of the hill. The wind comes up the hill from the left of the image, producing a substantial lift volume, or region of rising air, which is great for Slope Soaring. The relatively sharp edge or "lip" between the slope and the flat field can be useful for Dynamic Soaring when the wind is within the correct speed range. There is a large flat field to the right which is excellent for Hand Launch Aerobatics when the wind is too light to support Slope Soaring or DS.
